Rev. Dr Chika Uzor is a Catholic theologian, Chaplain and psychotherapist from Amokwe, Enugu State, Nigeria. He lives in Switzerland. Throughout his life, he has been driven by a commitment to serving vulnerable communities. His earlier work included helping revive the greater Amokwe water project, ensuring access to potable water to all families in his home town Amokwe.
His lifelong commitment to inclusion was shaped by the experience of his younger brother, who contracted polio as a child. After receiving life-changing support from strangers, his brother regained mobility and later studied Public Health Administration up to PhD level abroad. This experience convinced Rev. Dr. Uzor that disability is not defined by physical impairment, but by the barriers society creates through exclusion and discrimination.
From this conviction, and in gratitude for what his brother’s life-changing experience, the vision of what would become Chibugwu Institutein Amokwe was born in 2000—an inclusive place where children and young people with and without disabilities learn and train together. To turn this vision into reality, he founded the«Amokwe Nigeria Association (Switzerland) (VAN)»in 2000 and, in 2001, its Nigerian partner organization, the«Chibugwu Amokwe Nigeria Foundation (CANF)».What began as a vocational training initiative has since developed into the «Chibugwu Comprehensive and Vocational Secondary School»,a government recognized secondary school that combines quality general education with practical vocational training in fields such as information technology, tailoring and fashion design, leatherwork, electrical installation and maintenance, and home economics. Students with physical disabilities are provided with free access to education and the opportunity to develop their talents and potential independently and with dignity.
His Vision and Mission
He believes every child deserves the opportunity to learn, develop his or her talents, and participate fully in society—regardless of physical ability.
Together with like-minded partners, he is committed to breaking down barriers and enabling young people with disabilities to access quality education, vocational training, and the opportunity to build independent and fulfilling lives. Their work is founded not on pity, but on respect, equal opportunities, and empowerment. They strive to create an environment in which the abilities of every individual are recognised, nurtured, and valued, and where diversity is embraced as a source of strength.
Through education, collaboration, and community engagement, they seek to help build a future in which disability is no longer a cause of exclusion, but one in which every person has the opportunity to realise their full potential and make a meaningful contribution to society.
