Chibugwu Educational Institute for Children and Youth with and without Physical Disabilities in Amokwe, Nigeria

Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, has fallen to 161th place between 2023 and 2025, according to the UNDP HDI (Human Development Index). There are approximately 25 million people living with disabilities in Nigeria, of whom 3.6 million are severely disabled (cf. World Report on Disability (WHO & World Bank, 2011)) Despite this high number of disabled people in the population, their attention and social inclusion is hardly of public interest in Nigeria. On the contrary. In Nigeria, physically disabled people are excluded from society. Most young people with physical disabilities do not have access to schooling.
Chibugwu Institute
Since 2001, Amokwe Nigeria Association (VAN) has supported the development, development and operation of the educational institute for young people and children with and without physical limitations in Amokwe and the surrounding area. Gradually in operation since 2004, a secondary school was introduced in the institute, which was officially called «Chibugwu Comprehensive and Vocational Secondary School» recognised by the State of Nigeria.
The aim of our support is to create an institution where children and adolescents with physical disabilities, without discrimination, have the same educational opportunities as other children and adolescents who are not physically disabled. A further goal is to enable those affected to improve their living situation sustainably themselves through school and vocational training and to sensitize the population to the situation of those affected in particular. Furthermore, the association wants to contribute to the promotion and safeguarding of the school and vocational training of children and adolescents in general in Amokwe and the surrounding area.
