The Centre has three objectives: education, inclusion and rehabilitation of children and adolescents with special physical support needs.
Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, has fallen to 161th place between 2023 and 2025, according to the UNDP HDI (Human Development Index). About 25 million people with disabilities live in Nigeria, of which 3.6 million are severely disabled (see World Report on Disability (WHO & World Bank, 2011). Despite this high number of people with impairments in the population, their attention and social inclusion is hardly of public interest in Nigeria. On the contrary. In Nigeria, physically disabled people are excluded from society. Most young people with physical disabilities do not have access to schooling. Many parents see no hope for a productive future for their child with special physical support needs that would justify the financial cost of their education or training.
The public school system and educational institutions also have no place for people with special physical support needs. The few families with such relatives for whom they could finance a primary education, find no opportunities for further schooling of their child. This situation significantly impedes the social integration and inclusion of people with special physical support needs in Nigeria.
The project «Chibugwu Institute» and his «Chibugwu Comprehensive and Vocational Secondary School» want to counteract this situation.
Children and young people without previous school experience attend a basic course in «Reading, writing and mathematics»before they are accepted into a training program.
The target groups
The target group is children and adolescents aged 12 to 25 years with and without mild physical support needs. They come from Amokwe and the surrounding communities. The mixing counteracts the possible isolation of pupils with special needs.
